Brake pad life at Road America

Postby 50shadesof blue » Mon May 22, 2017 7:39 pm

I am wondering what other teams were seeing in regards to brake pad wear at Road America? We went through a full set of front and rear pads down to the metal baking plates (Hawk Dtc-60/30) each day. Last year a set of pads would last a full weekend at other tracks.

Did other teams see the same pad usage compared to other tracks? Or do I need to rethink my brake setup?

We have found that Road America eats brake pads at 50% or more than any other track. If you can make it at RA you can easily make it anywhere.

I was not there, but I heard other teams talking about the same issues. Brake Pad wear was higher than anticipated.

I was shocked too overall, but we did do HPR both days and Saturday RA on fronts and the weekend on new rears for RA. Rears got into the backing plate at the very end Sunday. GO HAWKS! Still it was more than we had seen anywhere else by far. Three 120+mph brake zones per lap I guess.

Our pad wear was brutal too, backing plates at the end of Saturday and retired early when the brakes were gone 7 hours in on Sunday. Sunday's pads were lightly used before the practice day but I figured they would be fine if we backed up our braking points. Nerp.

We normally get through a whole weekend with pads to spare at other tracks, so this was over double our normal wear.

We used to burn up Hawks really fast, if you got hawks to last a full day at RA I'd say you're doing pretty good.

I concur with those that have said around double the pad wear rate, it's always been that way at RA for us, it's the worst track I've seen for brake wear by far and we've always had to make sure the brake system was in tip top shape just to survive.
