UTQG ratings

Postby Kaplan69 » Wed Nov 22, 2017 8:55 pm

Hello all! Happy Thanksgiving!! Hope to meet lots of you at COTA next month.. This is a very general question.., and I realize there are numerous factors, but..... as a soon-to-be-racing-in WRL novice (not a novice racer) I really don't want to get drug into the softer UTQG rated tires; you know, the maybe not so 180 ones.... I'm considering several which have 200 treadwear, so as there would be no question on their longevity.. Given like brands and tires, how much grip, sticktion, speed, wear, whatever, would you be giving up by going to a 200 UTQG tire? Thanks to all, see ya soon... Ken

Let me pose the question a much simpler way........ Does anyone have any guesstimate of how much longer a 200 treadwear tire might last over a 180 treadwear? example; " We get 14 hours roughly out of our Super Donut 180's.... the 200's will go 18 hours, but are about 2 seconds a lap slower.." Bueller?? anyone?'....... Ken

As you already suspect, the UTQG numbers are not to be taken literally. The RE-71R, Rival S (not sure about the 1.5) and A052 are the ones that are softer than the other "Extreme Performance Summer" tires.

The R-S4 is the tire I have seen the most this year and gives excellent life by most accounts. The Star Spec and RT615K+ are similar well-rounded choices. Also consider the AD08R and VR-1 from series sponsors Yokohama and Maxxis.

No problem, good to have some posts on the forum.

Enjoy COTA, I was at the last two races there, but couldn't put it all together for another 20+ hour tow this year.

I'll be at COTA as well, we're pumped. Anyway, Glen is right on with his assessment. There's another series in the Northeast with some good tires threads on Facebook. All kinds of advice and photos there.
We're bringing 2 new sets just because these tires are cheap compared to the normal ones we run and we'd rather not try and make 1 set or even 6 tires last all weekend.
