2017 Barber Thread

Postby zack_280 » Thu Jun 29, 2017 7:53 pm

Thought I'd start a Barber thread. This will be our (Chattanooga Tourenwagen Meisterschaft's) first WRL race. We've run quite a few races with Chumpcar, but we've generally had minor bad luck at Barber. We're hoping to lift the curse with this race. We all love this track and it's pretty forgiving for our relatively-slow-in-a-straight-line E30.

I think we'll be running in GP2, but we are going to be way underpowered. We haven't weighed the car in a while, but we are probably between 2400 and 2500 lbs and we need to be at ~2550 for GP3 or quite lighter or have a bit more power to be a contender for GP2.

Here's a recent pic of our car at NCM (if i interneted it correctly). #Aero

What's the track surface like at Barber? How hard is it on tiers?

It wasn't too bad on Yoko 205s for our E30 last year and it was pretty good on our 225 RS3s the year before. For our car, I'd expect to do the full weekend on a single set of RS4s, but the heat may play a factor.

Is this event at risk of cancellation?

It looks like we haven't exceeded 10 teams yet.

There are currently 19 cars registered in DLB. Considering it's still more than a month away I think you'll see several more sign up before the race.

WTF, your last race was in May and you have a professional mechanic on the team. I did 3 motor swaps in 2 weeks earlier this year and I'm just a desk jockey. New motor must be super cheaty...

Burningham will be there with the Lexus SC300 for our first WRL race as well. Pretty sure we won't have the 944 at this race, so single car entry this time. We usually do ok at Barber since we know it so well. I am not positive on class since this is our first race, but if I figure it right we are a solid GP2 car.

As far as the tire wear question, the track is pretty easy on tires if you just don't overdrive the car. Turn 2 can eat tires up if you let it.

Looking forward to our first WRL race, I hope we have a few more cars sign up. 30-40 would be a better number than the 20 we have currently. We have put the word out trying to get some more local teams to sign up.

Well I don't think we have anything to hang with a GTO Mustang, but we'll give it our best shot by trying to be reliable and fast as we can.

Well, we'll probably be a little behind the pace in GP2, but we're hoping for consistency, reliability, and not doing stupid stuff. Based on our history, that's asking a lot. We definitely don't expect to be contending for an overall win. Glad to see Burningham and Basil Weenie are going to be there. Hopefully the legit competition will help us improve our racecraft. I've also heard others verbally commit who aren't signed up, so I'm hoping for a field of over 30 cars. 40 would be very nice.

Our little miata will be at Barber in GP3. Now signed up. Curious about how the mini Enduros will work or if that is a separate group. Will garages be available? This is one of my all time favorite tracks so would love to see 40 cars dicing it up. Being an Arkansan I understand that August in Alabama is about as miserable as it gets. Hope we get the supplemental soon.

If anyone is on the fence we are taking applications for additional drivers. Would love to have a guy that can help up with data analysis and general team/driving improvement.

I asked about the mini-enduro. My understanding is that it will take place during the race. It would be nice to have supps to officially confirm.

Yeah what's up with the supp's? I see the schedule is up for the 24 at HP, but not Barber. I also hear a couple of teams are verbally saying they are in but no official sign up. I know of one team that says they will run it if they survive the 24 at VIR 2 weeks before, but not many cars truly survive a 24 without some major repairs so don't expect to see them here.

Thanks for getting the schedule up! This may be a stupid question and I may have missed it but will their be garages available? We tow with an open trailer and would love a covered storage/car part area. Thanks!

There aren't any garages available at Barber. There is some space under the building, but they typically don't let anyone paddock there.

We'll be making our WRL debut at Barber with our LS swapped Porsche 924S. Was hoping for a practice day since it is a new track and we're making the 10 hour drive from Dallas, but we'll survive. We're part of a larger CCWS team that decided to branch out into WRL. looking forward to racing with this crew. We've got one seat open if anyone needs a ride. PM me or email at cscowden@gmail.com for details.

Thanks
Chris

I put the word out to some Barber experienced drivers, maybe one of them will hit you up for the seat.

I'm getting pretty excited to meet some new friends and see old friends this weekend. Also planning on getting there a little early to tour the Museum. We are shooting for getting to Barber around noon.

Feel free to stop by and say hey some time this weekend. I'm driving down in a 40' white Freightliner car hauler/RV. It's hard to explain exactly what it looks like. Just imagine the adult bastard offspring of a Freightliner sleeper tractor and a bad RV and that's probably pretty close. It's fairly unique. Our car is an '87 E30 with DTM stripes and a unique roof mounted gold foil wrapped wing.

This was probably the best race I've ever competed in. We made a pass for P2 overall (2nd in class) within the last 30 minutes on day one and P4 overall on Day 2. We ended up in P2 day one (overall and in class) and ran out of gas on day 2 and finished in P6 on day 2 overall, P3 in class. Both days were exciting to race right down to the last minute. I know that we didn't win either day and we didn't run a perfect race either day, but all-in-all it was a good showing and when we got home we drove the car into the garage looking a little dirtier, but basically unchanged.

Thanks to the WRL staff for putting on a good event. In my estimation the racing was clean and the competition was strong. My only complaint is the heat, but Birmingham in August is probably going to be a bit rough. Chattanooga Tourenwagen is looking forward to our next WRL race (still TBD).

Burningham also had a great time at this race. I thought the driver experience and courtesy was higher in this race than what we typically see in other series. The only 2 downsides were the heat as you say and the lower car count. As long as the cool suit holds out it's not too bad, even in August. We were lucky enough to not have any mechanical issues so we just drove. Being very familiar with this track is obviously helpful. We look forward to the next event, hope we can drag a few more cars out next time.
